Shaw Air Force Base is home to the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing and the 20th Fighter Wing. The latter has a mission to provide support to combat-ready air force personnel. The wing is the largest F-16 wing in the United States Air Force. Shaw Air Force Base is located near the cities of Sumter, Oakland, and Columbia where off-post housing can be found. Homes for sale or rent are available as well as apartment units. Shaw Air Force Base offers over 700 available family housing units which have all undergone major renovations. A waiting list may be in effect depending on the time of year, and military personnel are encouraged to contact the housing office to determine what housing is available in which neighborhood. Shaw Air Force Base offers four distinct housing units including Shaw Heights, Wherry Units, and Palmetto Heights. Dormitories are provided for single airmen, and if approved airmen may live off base with an approved basic allowance for housing.
The Shaw Air Force Base area is serviced by the Sumter School District92s 17 and Two. If students live on base, they will attend the Sumter School District Two schools. Depending on the residential neighborhood selected, the school districts will differ. Be sure and research the schools in the area prior to making any purchasing or renting decisions. Home schooling options are provided by the State Department of Education and more information can be obtained by calling the South Carolina Independent Home School Association at 803-454-0427. Six colleges and universities are also available off base, and the Air Force Aid Society Educational Scholarship can be accessed at the Airman and Family Readiness Center or by calling 803-895-1252.
